James

Still smoking my cigarette, I wave at Rainbow when I see her come in. I'm pretty sure she had a name, but I've already forgotten it. I'm standing in line so I just happened to notice how lost she looked.

"Hey, Rainbow!" I call out. "Come join me."

I mean, she hadn't noticed my sexiness before, but I'm sure that some time apart must have completely fixed that.

Cassie

I look over to where he is, my cheerful demeanor instantly turning sour (what do you mean I was just moping two seconds ago? I wasn't!).

"No," I say, crossing my arms and pouting a little, but like, not in an unattractive way.

James

I roll my eyes in a sexy way.

"Please, who else are you going to sit with?" I challenge.

Cassie

I look around the room. I hate to admit it, but he's right. No one else would ever sit with me. Come to think of it, there sure are a lot of people sitting alone... I'm not sure how so many people can sit in their own corner given the size of the space! But they seem to be managing.

I steel myself. "I'd rather sit alone than with you. You're rude."

I turn my head in kind of a tsundere way. I don't want to sit with him, even if he is incredibly sexy. And has cute, fluffy ears.

James

I roll my eyes in a sexy way once again.

"Sitting alone is a great way to start your first day of high-school, Rainbow."

Cassie

"Ughhhhh, fine, I guess I'll sit with you..." I say with a dramatic sigh, then grumble a little.

I set my food down on the table--even though I totally didn't mention that I ever got it (lol whoops!!)--and take a seat. I can't believe I'm sitting with him, but I did sort of lie before. Even sitting with this sexy jerk is better than sitting alone. Wait did I just call him sexy?

James

I sit down next to her, smirking. I knew I'd get my way eventually. It just usually takes people a few minutes to realize how awesome I am beneath my rough exterior. Well, then there's the fact I'm hot.

"So, Rainbow," I drawl. "That's some awesome hair you got."

Cassie

"You're lying," I say with a pout. "Everybody hates it. And my eyes, and my wings. And my shadow elemental form."

No one has ever actually told me that they hate these things, but it's so obvious. I can always tell. I can feel it. All those looks of judgement, all the stares. It's so hard, dealing with it all the time.

James

His eyes widened curiously.

"You have a shadow elemental form?" he asked.

Cassie

Oh no. I should never have brought it up. Now I have to talk about it.

"Yes," I answer with a dramatic sigh. "I'm part shadow elemental, but not completely. I'm just a half-breed." I say the last bit with an air of sadness. "I always transform at night, but I could transform during the day if I wanted to."

James

"Huh," I muse, rolling the idea over in my head. So, Rainbow was a half-breed, too. "I'm a half-breed, too. I'm part werewolf, part other weres, part human."

As I spoke, I started eating my lunch that I'd gotten at some point.

Cassie

My eyes widen a little. "Really? What kinds of weres?"

I see him eat his lunch, and remember that I have mine. I'd completely forgotten about it between all the talking and self-pitying. (But really, I think I'm very deserving of pity. Actually wait, I don't want anyone's pity!)

James

"All kinds," I replied. "Pretty awesome, right?"

I continued to eat my generic food.

Cassie

"All kinds?" I ask. "You mean you can turn into any animal at all?"

That sounds like an amazing power, unlike all of mine.

James

"Not yet," I admit, frowning. "I can only shift into a tiger, wolf, and a bird. I'm sure that's only temporary, though. It's not like I'm a freak or anything."

My ears fall. No one could understand how hard it was to not be able to shift into all of my animals.
