It would be so much simpler if I had a high rank, but for some reason I was number seven, and still clueless as to why.

Hiro: "Not sure if that includes me, darling."

Iliana: "If what includes you?" For once I was confused. What was this guy talking about? Maybe he was having delusions from being starved.

Hiro: I smiled. "Too far gone for you to do me much good. As much as you hate it, no one knows my name and we're too far down for anyone to care. I'm sure no one knows where you are right now, do they?"

Iliana:"The feeds are constantly monitoring my every move, so they may not know but they can see." A creepy thought, really. That the government was watching my every move. And that they could somewhat tell the assassins where to find me.

Hiro: I laughed. "As if I didn't know that. Though you might want to get a move on. They'll be wondering why someone as fascinating as you is hanging around with the likes of me."

Iliana: "Actually, being seen with you would be helpful to me, though if you want to be rid of me so badly I can go." I carefully slip my dagger into my boot, preparing to leave.

Hiro: I raised an eyebrow. "I'm helpful? How so?"

Iliana:"If they see me with unknowns then the government may get bored of watching me, or decide I'm losing my value. If I spend enough time among unknowns my rank may even go down, though that would be a miracle." My rank had been 7 since the day I was born, and had given no sign of changing.

Hiro: "Right. So I'm helpful. Well, always good to feel needed."

Iliana: I smirk "I suppose it is, though I've never experienced it. How can I be of help to anyone when my very presence puts them in danger of fame?"

Hiro: "Oh, I don't know. Maybe a higher rank will give someone enough face to get a job." I rolled my eyes and got up. "Wait, did you hear that? I think it's Death calling. I'll be right back." I moved towards the direction of the supposed Death.

Iliana: My expression is hard. "Yeah, you get a job along with "WANTED" stamped in red across your head (hypothetically, of course). You don't know what you're asking for when you ask for fame."

Hiro: I laughed. "Oh, just a smidgen of money would keep my seven brothers and sisters from starving to death," I joked. "And maybe my cheating mother and my drunk father would chip in and we'd all be a happy family."

Iliana:"Wow, you really think that all your problems are solved by a job? Money only can do so much - I've learned that the hard way." I think of my father disappearing, and all the money we spent sending search parties. Of my mother sobbing in her bedroom when I was asleep, because no one could replace my father. Of the train ticket, that was expensive, but was a waste when I missed the train.

Hiro: "I'm pretty sure a job can supply money. How would you know? Have you ever been hungry?" I was losing my cool. "Have you ever had that gnawing feeling inside your gut but you know that it won't ever be filled?" I smiled grimly. "Have you ever even gone a day without food?"

Iliana:"Have you ever felt cold, hard fright? Have you ever had that spine-tingling that comes along with knowing you're being stalked? Have you ever gone an entire day just running from your nightmares?" I countered.

Hiro: "Now, I know I've never been stalked, but I have felt frozen. Both ways. On cold winter nights where we couldn't afford any food, and in the long moments when my mother coughs and I freeze because I can't afford any medicine. And I run from nightmares every day." I shake my head. "Do you ever see the cold, stale bodies on the street? Did you ever know them?"

Iliana: "I prefer not to. And before this turns into a flat-out: my-horse-is-better-than-your-horse, could we just agree that everyone has problems? Whether your rich or poor, famous or a nobody, everyone faces challenges. Maybe my life seems easy to you, and maybe yours seems less scary to me, but the fact of the matter is that we both have issues in our lives, even if they're very different."

Hiro: "Right. And now you want to be the peacemaker. Go ahead. I'm leaving."

Iliana: "Why are you leaving? I just didn't think it was much of a battle to fight, is all."

Hiro: "You know what? I'm good. I probably need to go feed my mom," I replied bitterly, turning away. I sighed. "And I was kidding about having seven brothers and sisters. Apparently, you believed me." And then I started walking.

Iliana: I slumped back down into my position on the floor. I was terrible with people, and somewhat gullible, too. And now the second of the two people to talk to me today was walking away, apparently pissed off. I sighed, and tried to hold back my tears, thinking how alone I was in this world.

Hiro: "Mom?" I blinked in the darkness, closing the door behind me. It didn't help. "Come on, mom. Just a little sound." Nothing. I felt my throat tighten, so I went to the pantry. I had left food here. I knew I had.
And it was gone. I bit my lip, my breathing speeding up. It had only been two days. I'd left the pantry full. I walked to the bedroom. "Mom?"
Blood. Everywhere. "Oh, shit. Mom."
Why would they kill? Wasn't there enough of that? They could have just taken the food. They didn't have to take a life.
"I'm sorry, mom. I'm really, really sorry."
