Across These Sands Lies Freedom

Welcome to the Kh’Arshith desert, a realm very unlike out own. The massive desert is dotted with oases, and, for a desert, is relatively cool. It rains for a brief period in the winter months, but its otherwise dry, the only water to be found becoming that from the oases. Travel far enough west, and there is a large rainforest-like jungle, known as Thianmar (pronounced thee-an-mar), or ‘The Spirit Jungle’. It’s a sacred place, barely inhabited. The only living things there are the animals who call it home and the occasional shaman. It is said that the spirits of those who die also inhabit this place, and it is regarded with both reverence and caution. The desert itself, as much as the jungle at its western edge, is a wild place full of magic. There is the occasional city populated by average humans, merchants, gypsies, musicians and artists, craftspeople, and any number of other specialists. But the true magic is seen not in these small crowded cities which seem to resemble something like a crowded Moroccan market, but in the elusive nomadic factions living outside of the cities. There is VERY strict division between these nomadic people. They are all very strict, and very proud. The members of each faction possess unique spiritual and magical capabilities, and these factions are even further divided into tribes. While there is occasionally bickering between these tribes, the real war is between the individual factions. Each faction thinks that they are the best, the others insignificant. Factions will not allow their members to interact, and any kind of relationship between members of separate factions is absolutely forbidden. Tribes have leaders, and these leaders combined form a council that governs the faction. People in factions tend to be very strict and set in their ways. You have very limited options in terms of who you can have relationships with, who you can marry, what you must and mustn’t learn, how to behave. They aren’t big on homosexuality – if it gets out that you are gay or bisexual, you will be banished from your tribe and by extension, your faction, cast out and bringing shame to your family. Rebellion is also warrant for banishment. If you don’t conform…. Out you get. But there are rumours out there of a new tribe, the tribe of outcasts, of those banished and turned away, no longer wanted. Here anyone can come, no matter their home faction, sexual orientation, powers, etc. But this tribe is VERY elusive, simply a myth amongst those who live within the rigid boundaries of their factions. Is it really out there? Does it truly exist? And do you, courageous outcast, dare to brave the desert in search of it?

The Uulue (pronounced OO-loo-eh):
People of this tribe are elemental sorcerers. By the time they are one year old, they should already have shown an affinity for ONE of the four natural elements – earth, water, air, or fire. Tribes usually tend to be filled with one element – for example, those with an affinity for wind will often make up one tribe, while those of fire make up another. Affinities also tend to run genetically – if both parents have an affinity for one element, it is likely the child will have an affinity for the same element. Water elementals are especially rare and highly valued, because of their ability to produce clean drinking water for themselves and others. Those with affinities can manipulate, control, and produce their elements.

The Fenrishi (pronounced fenn-ree-shee):
The Fenrishi are gifted with the ability to possess the bodies of animals. Tryss and Fenris both belong to this tribe. When a child is one year old, they are placed overnight at a sacred spot near Thianmar. In the morning, the children are checked on. If they have disappeared, they are deemed unworthy of their legacy and do not return. No one knows what happens to them, but they are suspected to be dead. If the child has an animal with them, they have been accepted to use and hone thier skills. This animal will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Over the next few years, they bond with their animals and master possession of that animal’s body. After you have an animal companion bound to you, it is considered a crime punishable by banishment or even death to try and possess the body of another animal. Once you have mastered possession and can work as a team with your animal, there is an official ceremony where you are accepted as a full-fledged member of the tribe and a true Fenrishi. Fenrishi often resemble their animals, and it is not uncommon for relatives to look nothing alike. Animal companions are treated as equals, partners, not as pets, and are held with the utmost reverence. Killing your own animal or that of another is also punishable by banishment or death. Fenrishi can communicate with their animals, even though the animals cannot verbally speak aloud. You cannot, however, talk to another’s animal, or an untamed animal. That bond is solely between you and your companion.

The Thoron (pronounced thor-ron):
The Thoron are weatherbenders, able to control the weather, summoning great storms and destruction, or pushing them away to have clear skies. They cannot, however, affect ambient temperature and therefore cannot produce things such as snow or frost, but can create any kind of weather capable of appearing in the area.

The Kreeshi:
The Kreeshi can read minds and move objects with their minds. They cannot, however, lift anything too heavy. Lifting something with the mind actually puts a physical strain on the body, so you could not lift anything that your body would not normally be able to lift. There are tactics that can be used to block them from reading your mind, but a skilled Kreeshi is very difficult to keep out. Because of their powers, it is easy for them to pick out liars or those with ill intent.

Slade: I woke up to the sunlight streaming through the smoke-hole of my large tent and sat up, climbing out of my pallet. Another day..... the glimpse of sky i could see through the smoke-hole seemed to promise fine weather. I was happy about this. Bad weather was never fun.... I got dressed quickly, pulling on a loose dark green shirt and loose black linen pants. Most clothes you found around here were very lgiht-weight and loose, what with the heat. Even when you grew up with it and were used to it, wearing heavy thick clothing wasnt a particularly good idea..... I munched a few strips of dried meat and drank a bit of water for breakfast and then headed out to check on the camp. There werent many people stirring at this time of day. I spotted Thora across the way, exiting her tent. She was wearing a long white hooded cloak, a sky-blue shirt, and cream-coloured pants. Thora seemed to like light colours. Her mismatched silver-blue gaze met mine and a silent greeting passed between us before she informed me she was heading out to patrol around the area, see if anyone was coming. The Ceeran camp was at a little known oasis that was almost never used for two reasons: One, because it was WAY off the beaten path. The oases frequented by other tribes went in kind of a circle, a path. This one was far off, and made no logical sense to travel to. The other reason that it was avoided was because it was right at the edge of Thianmar, and almost nobody ventured this close, EVER. It was a perfect place for us to hide. But it was still a good idea to keep an eye out for people who may be seeking us out for one reason or another. I watched as Thora headed off and began going about my business, making sure everything was running smoothly and we had enough food/water for everyone.


Thora: I headed out on patrol, poking through the foliage of the oasis, keeping my senses alert. Sometimes people came here, and if they did, it was my job as a scout to make a decision and do something about the intruder. It wasnt often that people came by.... but who knows? Maybe today would be different. In any case, i enjoyed scouting anyways. It gave me some alone time with my thoughts.



Tryss: Kiro spiraled back down and alighted on my arm, reporting back. There was something.... but it was far away. Maybe a half-days journey. I checked the map again, my long night-black cloack flapping slightly around my knees in the slight breese. "Kiro says we're about a half a day from the oasis." i informed my brother, Fenris, who was standing quietly beside me, his wolf Nekoa standing equally silently next to him. He nodded, but seemed upset. "What's wrong?" i asked him. He shook his head. "Its just.... we've been travelling for weeks.... you didnt have to come with me, you know. You could've stayed at home." he said. I rolled my eyes. "And have the rest of my life pre-determined for me? No thanks. Im far too independent for that. Besides, id miss you. This is an adventure. Let's go." i said, heading towards the unused oasis. I heard Fenris sigh, but he followed me anyways. We'd be there soon enough....

My eyes watched the sky above me for a moment before dropping them back to the desert before me, good weather meant a good day normally. Well, except when it wasn't. Sighing I slipped out from under the little rock enclave I'd managed to find the night before and began walking again, I wasn't sure where I was going just that I was going to find them. If I found the Ceeran camp I was sure everything else would work itself out. Well, most likely it would. If it didn't...heh...I would figure that out later.

Falia: I awake from my dreams to only see Akira standing over me. "What's Wrong?" I say sitting up. She stares at me for a while before she answers. "Falia you can't go through with this." I sighed knowing what she meant and the truth was I didn't have much of a choice. It was either do this or be banished. I push her off. "There is nothing we can do so just drop it," I say to her getting dressed. She doesn't say anything but stands by me silently comunicating that she will follow me no matter what decision I made. I give my self one look before I leave, "Alright time to face the day."

Falia- Walking out I see the tribe go on with their morning but today is different today they are whispering about the girl set to marry Amiri and that girl just so happens to be me. Sighing I go towards my father's living quarters trying to not notice the people staring at her. Akira walks beside me, "Just ignore them they are not worth your breathe."
I nod and continue walking. We slow down when we get close and that is when I over hear a girl talking to my mother.
"I hear that its true there is a place outside of here where people run wild." the girl says to my mother.
"That is just a rumor, no one can prove it and if it was real no one would dare leave." my mother says back.
Akira pushes me forward seeing that I have stopped to listen to my mother's conversation. "You know you will be punished if you peep." I sigh and move on.
We enter my dad's quarters and low and behold sits Amiri like he owns the place.
"Oh looks who is here." Amiri says getting up to give me a kiss.
I push him off, "Don't touch me." Beside me Akira growls.
Amiri raises his eyebrow and gives me look that says I own you,"Now that is no way to treat your soon to be husband."
I grow angry, "I will never be yours." I slap him in the face. Realizing what I did I run away from him and don't stop till I have reached the edge of my village. I can't go back they will just banish me or worse force me to marry Amiri anyway no I have keep moving but where. That is when I remember my mother's conversation earlier so we head to the place no one knows exists with the hope that it will provide a better future for me and Akira. We walk for a while and soon I start to lose hope but Akira pushes me on. Then I finally see someone.
"Hey," I yell. I ran towards that person and see a female with long shaggy white blonde hair.

Thora: I heard someone speaking and looked up, instantly cautious. "Who are you and what is your business in this area?" i asked, deadly seriouos for the moment. I would not let my guard down until i knew i could trust this person. I was shocked to even find anyone - it was rare that we had newcomers to our tribe, and even rarer that people appeared at all. This was a strange development.

Falia: I falter a little, "Umm I am here looking for a place to start over." I didn't want to tell her everything. One because I was ashamed and two I don't really know her and I am a little suspicious. Akira stares at the girl seeing if she will attack and if she does Akira will be ready. "She seemd different," Akira says.

Thora: I raised an eyebrow, thinking. I could tell this girl was Fenrishi by the animal at her side. "A place to start over....?" i questioned. "Are you perhaps seeking the Ceeran?"

Falia: My eyesbrows furrow in curisity, "The Ceeran? Is it the place where everyone is accepted?" I say. Maybe I was stupid to seek this place out when I don't even know if it exists. "I wiull just go I'm wasting my time looking for something that doesn't exist." I turn to leave. Akira nudges me, "You can at least try to find out why she is out here alone maybe she is lost to or maybe you were right and the tribe exist you can't just give up now."
I sigh," Akira nothing is that simple. I probally just found some run away that has spent to long in the heat."

Thora: "Hey!" i said, offended. "I am not just 'some runaway whose been out too long in the heat'! And yes, the Ceeran is a unique tribe where anyone is acccepted. If you wish to join our group, i can take you to see our leader. What's your name?"

Falia: "Why should I tell you my name when you never told me yours?" I was still curious of her. She didn't really seem quite friendly. Akira nudges me again ,"Quite being so darn stubborn and just tell her your name so you can see the tribe I don't want to be out here anymore."
I roll my eyes but turn back to the girl. "The names Falia and this here is Akira. Now will you take us to the tribe?" I ask

Thora: I nodded. "Sure. My name's Thora, by the way. This way....." i muttered, removing my mismatched silver-and-blue gaze from the girl and beginning to head back to camp.

Falia: I walk behind curious to what I am going to find. "What do you think it will be like?" I ask Akira.
She pauses a moment, "Falia it isn't wise to get your hopes up you must be realistic."
I grumble, "I know but we are free now Akira no one is going to boss us around, I don't have to marry that aweful man." I try to contain my excitement and follow Thora but I feel my self wanting to run ahead to see it.

Thora: I could hear a seemingly one-sided conversatoin behind me and knew that Falia was probably talking to har animal. I kept going, eventually breaking through the thick oasis vegetation into the large clearing that was the camp, a ramshackle mishmash of tents, animals running around everywhere. People were now beginning to stir, the camp becoming more alive. I spotted Slade and waved him over. "The guy coming over is Slade, founder of the Ceeran and leader of our Tribe. Its up to him whether or not you stay." i said. Slade arrived, raising an eyebrow. "Who's this?" he asked. "Her name's Falia. She says she wants to join our tribe or something...." i muttered.
