New Kids on the Block
WARNING: This chat can and most likely will contain violence, blood/gore, psychological horror, strong language, and more.
"Welcome! I see you have chosen to enrol in the Miskatonic University here at Arkham, Massachusetts. As new students, you will be expected to attend lectures and learn to fend for yourselves.
You may have heard stories about Arkham before you came here, but let me assure you that there are no such things as zombies, shoggoths, alchemists, daemons, shamblers, necromancers, byakhees or great old ones. All of that is nonsense for the superstitious, and not to be believed my modern, forward-thinking folk. Also, I would like to add that we most certainly do not own a copy of the dreaded Necronomicon by the mad Arab Abdul Al-Hazred, and even if we did it would be strictly off-limits to all.
Do not be distressed by the strange activities that may occur during the night in Arkham, and ignore any puzzling sounds you may hear. After all, you are here to learn, not to solve mysteries. Please enjoy your learning experience here at the Miskatonic University." - Simon Armitage, Dean of the Miskatonic University speaking at the beginning of the 2011 term.
This is a horror character chat, and as such you should be prepared for awful things to happen to your characters. There is not much you can do about it, except try to go out with the bang. If your character dies or is arrested or goes incurably insane or whatever, just make a new character and join in again.
Name:
Age: (18 or higher)
Appearance:
Fears/Obsessions: (Be creative, this helps to drive the horror)
Degree: (What are they studying?)
Dorm: (All of the characters are staying in the Randolph Carter memorial Hall. Describe how your room is decorated, and any strange quirks. These may help to add to the horror, so be creative. Possibilities include a strange tapping sound like invisible claws on the floorboards, a window that shows a different plane of existence, or even something really subtle like walls and ceiling that create a strange angle in one corner of the room)
Rules:
-No god-moding. You may not dictate the actions of someone else's characters. The consequences, however, are fair game.
-Be a good sport. Don't break the horror element of the chat by always escaping from dangerous situations. Deus Ex Machina gets old quickly.
-Romance is allowed, but expect it to be cut brutally short by occult monstrosities.
-All participants must have at least one character, but can have more. Try to keep the male/female ratios equal. Also, you can take on the role of a monster as well.
-Not all of the horror is Lovecraft-inspired, but it is the most diverse and versatile, so it will make up a lot of the horror.
Hints:
-Always investigate. It gets you killed sooner, but it makes the CC more fun.
-These are good old-fashioned Arkham surnames, with links to historic personages of Arkham (and Innsmouth). Using them will give your character more chance of a crazy fate, but preferably no more than two characters with the same surname. Arkham surnames: West, Jermyn, Carter, Marsh, Armitage, Warren, Dexter Ward.
-Phn'glui Mglw'Nafh Cthulhu R'Lyeh Wgah'Nagl Fhtagn! Literally, 'In his house in R'lyeh, Cthulhu lies dreaming/sleeping/dead.'
-Most importantly, have fun!

This is a repeat of a previous thread that disappeared before it came to fruition.

Re: New Kids on the Block
Name: Terra West
Age: 21
Appearance: black hair in ringlets, dimples, a bit on the short side, also a bit on the plump side, usually wears pleated skirts, blouses, and sweater-vests.
Fears/obsessions: most people sleepwalk. She goes into a creepy trance, sneaks into random peoples' rooms, numbs part of their body, and carves a smiley face on it. She is afraid of wolves, dogs, and anything with unnaturally big teeth.
Degree: psycology
Dorm: at 1:30 bloody handprints start appearing on the walls, at random intervals in the night all the water turns on, and if you stand in the moonlight and look at your shadow, it looks like another shadow is creeping up to it with a knife, and if you press your ear against a light switch, you hear screaming when its on, and voices whispering things when its off.

Re: New Kids on the Block
Girls, so make a male character.
Btw, this is the Librarian.
Name: Simon Carter
Age: 35
Appearance: Basically Harrison Ford.
Fears/Obsessions: He is obsessed with the Necronomicon, which is kept in the library vault. He can't actually read it, as the words actually shift under his gaze.
Degree: N/A
Dorm: The library. It is vast and cold, and always silent. You could easily get lost in there and never notice.

Okay
Terra: I walk into the library and pause. Wy was I here, again? A single word echoes through my mind. Demons. I nod and start looking for books on demons.

Re: New Kids on the Block
"Daemons," repeats Carter. "How's your Coptic? We could try the Book of Eibon, or perhaps some other works."
Carter suddenly has an idea. "Follow me."
He leads Terra down into the basement, and stalks among the shelves until he comes to a heavy steel door. He types in the code.
"This is the vault where we keep the Necronomicon, written in the black speech of Leng by the mad Arab Abdul Al-Hazred. I'm afraid that I can't allow you more than three minutes with it in one day, because of university guidelines."
if the book wants to be read, it will let you read it, but Carter doesn't know this. The Necronomicon doesn't want to be read by him, so it refuses to let him understand the words.

Terra: I nod and walk over to the book. I pick it up and shift it in my hands, but an unknown dread keeps me from opening it.

Terra: uncertainly, I flip the cover open. But, before looking at it, I ask the librarian, "what is it about, anyway?"

Re: New Kids on the Block
"It details the prophecies of the Great Old Ones, in particular the knowledge of Cthulhu. It also explains the nature of a great many creatures that do not fit into accepted science."
Carter looks over the top of his half-moon glasses with a cool and collected gaze. "Needless to say it is all... untrue."

Terra: I nod. "Of course. However, I wondered if there was a book that just informed about demons, without the rest of that... stuff?"

Re: New Kids on the Block
"What you call daemons are in fact the three-dimensional facets of multi-dimensional entities of pure, amoral, chaos... Or so they say." Carter is beginning to get impatient. "I really think that you will find your answers in this book.
((If you're uncertain what Terra is going to discover in the book, just ask me in brackets and I'll give you a couple of quotes and a basic outline of what you might find.))

Re: New Kids on the Block
(Okay, thanks. I wasn't sure if it would mess up the plot or something.)
Terra: I open the book again. I'm not sure if I want to read it, but something is urging me on. Then, on an impulse, I flip to the index and look up the name of our school.
(Would she find anything?)
