Brok: "What's wrong?" I asked. "Sorry if this is awkward."

Dakota: "It's not awkward at all." I smiled slightly, but it fell almost right away. "I'm not sure you'd understand."

Brok: "I might not," I said. "Trey's your go to guy for stuff like that. But I can try."

Dakota: I bit my lip. "Well, my dad's an alcoholic," I started, already afraid he'd look at me as some kind of victim. "And he isn't exactly nice to me or my mom. He sent me a text a few minutes ago telling me I had to get home, but I'm sure he'll forget as soon as he gets drunk again. It's just started to bother me extra lately that I have such a suckish family..." Maybe because Brok had a good one - even if Kent wasn't his real dad.

Brok: Alcoholic father, huh? "Shane's dad was one too," I said, remembering how he'd finally told us last year about why he'd changed his last name.

Dakota: "Yeah, well, it's not uncommon these days. Anyway, that's what was bothering me. You have your answer."

Brok: I sighed. "I'm really sorry about that, Dakota," I said, wrapping my arms around her a little tighter. "No one should have to go through that."

Dakota: "It's okay, I'm used to it. But also, that's why I have to work so much, since my parents don't really ever give me money for anything. Like nail polish," I joked, trying to lighten up the mood a little. I

Brok: "I do like your nail polish," I said.

Dakota: I laughed. "My sharpie, yeah it's pretty stylish."

Brok: "On you, yes."

Dakota: My smile widened. "Well thanks. I started doing that in the 8th grade, the first time I actually /wanted/ polish. I think it'd be weird now if I actually wore legit nail polish."

Brok: I laughed and released my grip slightly, not wanting to choke her. "Hey. It's not exactly weird anymore, is it?"

Dakota: I was glad he didn't let go completely. "Nope, not for me. I do that with stuff all the time, though, make the best of what I have. It gets tiring sometimes, though. There are days I wish I could just buy anything, and not have to worry about the money."
