Serena: I squeezed my eyes shut, and mustered all my power. They couldn't find them, they couldn't find them. I sent a constant message to the scientists, in case they decided to tune in THEY'RE NOT READY. I WAS JUST ABOUT TO TEST A NEW ABILITY ON THEM. lie. THEY'RE NOT READY.

Johnny: I resisted the urge to check her thoughts, wondered what caused her reaction, but decided she would tell me later. it was too dangerous to tune in at a random time.

Serena: The scientists decided to let me have a few more days to 'destroy' them. Just great, more stress for me. I weakly put my head in my hands, still crouched at the bottom of the tree.

Mikey: "Why did they want me?" I asked. I felt the tears forming in my eyes. After everything I've gone through, I still have enough tears left to cry?

Johnny: I got a stressed feeling in my head, then realized i was absentmindedly tuning in to Serena's. Something wrong? I asked on high alert.

Serena: I shook my head slowly, not having much energy. Sending a message to the scientists, who are not telepathic, uses a lot of energy. Especially when you're pleading for them to spare lives.

Johnny: Good to know... i thought, my voice hollow. So she was supposed to kill us! But she was obviously fighting it. I could hang around her too much, then...

Mikey: Katherine had mysteriously disappeared, and I wondered if it had been the work of the scientists. "What the hell is going on here?"

Serena: I understand if you want to go. But can you just go now, then? I don't want to get attached and then lose you.

Johnny: My thoughts exactly... But you would already know that, wouldn't you? I thought bitterly. i wasn't mad at her. i was mad at myself for exposing my telepathy so easily like that.

Serena: No, I haven't listened to your thoughts since the unicorn incident. I looked up and made eye contact with Johnny, so he'd know I was telling the truth. How could you believe someone with their face in their hands?

Johnny: Oh... If it made sense, I then read my own mind, picking at my thoughts and going over the last couple years. It was different than... reviewing, like for a test. I was actually reading INTO the parts of my mind I had never bothered to look at. Like the parts about my dad leaving, getting thrown in here, the girl of my dreams breaking up with me over something stupid, thoughts i had shoved away and never wanted to look at again.
Did you get any of that? I asked abruptly.

Serena: Any of what? If he had been trying to send me his thoughts, I hadn't seen them. I was purposely not reading his mind.

Katherine: Before I knew I was even running, I found myself at least 20 to 30 yards from where I'd been hiding when the scientists came. Slowing down, and trying to catch my breath, I couldn't help but think if they had taken me, what they could've done. Horrible images burrowed themselves into my brain, and rooted there, unable to be nonchalantly forgotten about. I gently touched my cheek, and found that I had been crying. It had been a while since I had. At least 3 years. I looked around in a self-induced panic, searching the area for any threats. I gave up after a while, and sighed deeply.

(Um, the scientists decided not to capture them. It was a few pages back...)

Mikey: I couldn't help to think why the scientists didn't take me away. I knew I was going to be taken eventually, but why didn't they take me know? It was all a mess in my mind, but I didn't know what to think of it.

Serena: I believe you had decided to leave. I thought sharply to Johnny. But that was the only way to deal with goodbyes - to act like you didn't care.
