Unfinished Page

Emily just lost it when she saw her husband like that, and she felt the tears slip down her cheeks as she squeezed his hand back, trying to assure him and herself that their little Elena was going to be okay.

Nate brought Emily into a hug before two nurses directed them to chairs near Elena's incubator.

Emily returned the embrace before going over with him to the chairs.

Nate held her hand and watched Elena for the next few hours until both he and Emily feel asleep in their chairs.

Emily had her head resting lightly on his arm and woke, blinking a moment and remembering where they were. Her hand was still entwined with Nate's, and she moved carefully not to wake him. She gazed at her child with slightly hooded eyes. She really wasn't sure what to think yet. Her emotions at first were happiness and joy, now, more worried and honestly, scared.

Nate woke a few moments later and saw Emily watching Elena. He stood and lightly placed a hand on her back. "Want to go home and take a shower and come back? I'm sure Gavin and Jess would watch her." he suggested lightly in her ear.

Emily nodded slightly, standing up and joining him. "Let's go find them then." She said, "Knowing Gavin, they might be in the cafeteria." She half joked with a small smile.

Nate smirked. "He's probably eating all the food." He commented as they walked down the hall toward the cafeteria.

Emily gave a small laugh at that, and sure enough, when they checked down there, Jess and Gavin sat at a table, Gavin almost literally devouring everything, however, more civilized than he used to. "Finally taught him some manners, huh?" She jokingly asked Jess.

Nate gave Gavin a playful slap on the back as he took a seat by him. The moment he sat down, his tone changed to serious. "Em and I are going to go home and shower and change, would you two mind watching Elena?"

Gavin looked over at his brother-in-law, now having stopped eating, and nodded. "'Course we can do that." He answered. He was sort of surprised they figured they still had to ask. Elena was his and Jess' niece after all.

Nate gave him a weak smile before saying goodbye and heading toward the parking garage with Emily.

"You want me to drive or do you want to?" Emily had to question. It would be better if the less frazzled out of both of them would.

Nate slowly handed her the keys. He was used to driving everywhere, but he knew he was too worried to drive safely. "Would you?" He asked, looking at her.

Emily nodded slightly, taking the keys from him. She drove home, snapping out of her momentary daze from the events of the day. She couldn't get over it, obviously. She didn't want to either. She wasn't about to try and fool herself.

Nate gave her a kiss as they got out of the car and walked inside. He walked upstairs and stepped into the shower, before realizing where he was.

Emily simply laid down on the bed, closing her eyes and trying to relax while Nate took his shower. Normally, the thought of joining him might have crossed her mind, but there were already so many jumbled thoughts in her head.

Nate sighed and slowly ran his hands through his soaked hair, trying to wash his worries away, but knew it wouldn't work. He dried off and headed to the closet to find clean clothes.

Emily took a quick shower. Maybe because she was eager to get back to the hospital. She wrapped a towel around her frame and picked out some clothes from the dresser in the bedroom, putting them on.

Nate was going over some work papers just to get his mind off the worries that were flooding it. He looked up when Emily stepped out of the bathroom and gave her a week smile.

Emily gave a small smile of her own back, going over to him and wrapping her arms around his torso.

Nate relaxed into her and sat the papers down before turning around and pulling her closer in his arms.

Emily had her head half buried in his shoulder, closing her eyes slightly.

Nate closed his eyes and smoothed her hair down before resting his head on hers and just staying in there like that.

They stayed like that for a long while, eventually Emily tilted her head to kiss the side of his neck gently before she pulled away a little bit.
