The Village

"No." Peter ran a hand through his hair. "I'm staying out here. Keep you safe."

Artemis frowned "but that's what the guard is for. come in and have supper with us?"

Peter sighed and nodded, "alright. Fine." He stood and followed her inside. He'd be back out once she was asleep he decided. Cillia already had the table laid out.

Artemis sat down and watched the other two silently. the food smelled wonderful

Cillia dished food for everyone then made them say blessing over the food. She then started in on Henry and how Henry did this, or Henry did that. Peter listened with only a mild interest before he finally cut in.
"Anderson boy is sick and dying." He said.

Artemis's head snapped up "what? what's wrong?"

"He's got a fever that can't be stopped." Peter said, pushing away the food he had barely touched. "That will be the third person to die of something we could not cure." He ran a hand through his hair, his eyes still slightly distant as he leaned back in his chair.
Cillia watched him. "What are you thinking Peter?" Her voice quiet, but serious.
He glanced at her then at Artemis. "I was going to go talk to the Elders, see if I could get permission to travel throught the woods and to The Towns and get medicine."

Artemis's gasped "but peter.. the woods? you'll never make it!"

Peter looked at her. "Those we do not speak of know fear. I will wear the safe color and they will know that I am in fear and not a threat. We can't just keep letting people die."
"It's suicide Peter!" Cillia stared at him. Peter shook his head and stood.
"It's what has to be done, Cillia." He said and walked back outside to sit on the porch, his mind still lost in its thoughts.
Cillia's lip quivered and tears threatened to escape her eyes.

Artemis ran after him and lightly grabbed his shirt, pulling him to face her "are you really doing this? she squeaked

Peter stared down at her, his hands resting on her upper arms. "I have to try, Artemis." His eyes searched her face. "We can't let people die, just because we are afraid."

"then at least don't go alone? let me come with you?" Artemis begged, gripping his arm tighter

Peter shook his head. "You are brave, Artemis. But I can't....I can't bear the thought of you being harmed. And someone has to look over Cillia." He watched her closely. "I have to first talk to the elders."

Artemis frowned and sighed "then let us pray the say no. the boy's going to die... we can't lose you as well"

Peter watched her. He couldn't stand the thought of another innocent person dying. He kissed her forehead and turned and went to go to find the Elders.

Artemis worried her lip and turned back into the house, sitting down at her plate but not eating anything

Cillia had her hands in her lap, staring at her food. She took a deep breath and looked at Artemis. "Eat." She said gesturing to her plate then took a bite of her own food.

Artemis obeyed, finding it hard to swallow her food. She finally gave up and looked to cillia "you okay?"

Cillia looked at her, her fork shaking in her hand as she gave a small nod. "O-of course. The Elders won't let him go. I know they won't. So there is not point in worrying over it." She tried to fake a smile.

Artemis slipped her hand in hers and gave a small squeeze, not knowing what to say

Cillia gave a small squeeze in return and a forced smile before she stood and cleared the table.

Peter came back that night during the early hours of the morning. He sat on the porch outside Artemis's window, his eyes trained on the forest.

Artemis heard him return and crept forward, placing her head against the screen as she watched him

The mist surrounded the ground, seeming to leak from the trees. He fixed his jacket and ran a hand through his hair, not moving from his spot. His eyes were tired, wanting sleep.

"you should get some sleep" Artemis murmured
