NaNoWriMo Character Chat

Book Title: Hum (that's just for now, I'm not sure exactly what it will be)
Name: Serena
Age:17
Species (if your novel is paranormal, science fiction, etc.): Human, though she has been experimented on by scientists (it doesn't show)
Description (outer): Black hair past her shoulders, green eyes, on the paler side, 5'5"
Personality: Quiet and serious. She does talk and has friends, but she doesn't laugh as much as most people.

I entered a small room, there wasn't anyone around except with this girl with dark hair. I gave her a small smile, and sat in a chair in the corner.

Serena: I watched the guy cross the room over the top of the book I was "reading". The buzz in my head was particularly bad currently, though no words were forming. Reading was a good way to get my mind off the noise, but watching people was better. Maybe this guy would do something interesting, though I highly doubted it given the setting.

Luken: I sat in awkward silent while the girl read. Should I say hi? It seemed rude to not say something but it seemed rude to interrupt her reading. God, I'm a pussy even about stuff like this. Just say hi, Luke.

"Hello," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Serena:"Hi...?" I hadn't expected him to talk to me, I was the weird girl sitting in the corner. But talking would definitely get my mind of the noise in my head, which was growing worse. "Uh, what's your name?"

Luke: Oh, well, that wasn't such the crisis I imagined it to be. She asked for my name. I hated giving out my last name. People would always link me to him.

"My name is Luke. What's your name?"

Serena: "Hmm, i think I know a Luke..." Wow, that sounded lame, but I wasnt very good at talking to people, and it didn't seem like Luke was all that great either. Maybe that was a good thing, because I wouldn't have to put on a show of being more outgoing than I am. "Oh, and my name's Serena."

Luke: I smiled. "I don't think I know a Serana. I do now, I suppose. I know a Renata--she's my best friend." Why was I babbling so much?
"What are we doing here anyway?

Serena: "Renata? That's an interesting name. Most people I know consider Serena an unusual name. Since all of them were named Sarah, or Emma, or Jack." I looked around the room.
"I'm here, uh, reading." I looked down, because if I look people in the eye when I'm lying, it's usually pretty obvious. "What are you doing here?"

"An interesting name for an interesting girl." I ran a hand throught my hair, what was I doing here anyway? Renata, Alecka, Sam, where were they all?
Do I still need to save them?

"I--don't know what I'm doing here. Maybe I'm avoiding my duties."

Serena:"And what are your duties, exactly?" I wanted him to keep talking, maybe this would lead to a story. Stories were longer than conversations, obviously, and would give me something more to focus on. Besides, if I didn't get him talking he'd probably leave. And then I'd be alone with the buzzing.

Luke: I sighed. "It's a rather long story involving superpowers, stupid American scientists, and pride. Lots of pride."
It sure was indeed. Maybe if I wasn't so damn proud I wouldn't be in this much trouble.

Serena: "Well, we have one thing in common: a problem with American scientists. " I hesitated, should I tell him? There wasn't really any harm, unless he was from the lab that had been experimenting on me, which I doubted. "When I was first born a group of scientists were experimenting with mind control and telepathy. Some how they got a hold of me, and tampered with my brain. Since then there has been a slight hum in the back of my skull, but recently it's been growing stronger. And forming words, which is where the telepathy part comes in."

Luke: "That's what happened to my ancestors. Ever heard of the famous Sean Artwood? Yup, sadly, I'm related to him. Scientists tampered with him and other eleven kids from New York state. He developed superstrength, flying abilities, and energy beams. Blah blah, he became this big hero. But that's his story. My story is way different from his."

Serena: "Wow, as far as I know I'm the only one that has this weird dysfunction, luckily." I imagined a world where everyone heard this odd buzzing noise in their head, a world where the scientists could control everyone. The though gave me shivers. "What's yourstory?"

Luke: I wonder if she could read my mind? Did I come off as a wimp to her? Should I tell her my story? "Well, where I come from, everyone has superpowers. Incredible abilities. You should see Renata, even thought she barely uses her powers in front of me. I'm descent from two of the most powerful mutants ever, when people think Artwood, they think of power. I guess karma or genetic hates me because I'm powerless. I can't read minds or see dreams like my ancenstor Jen, or I can't lift cars up like Sean did. It sucked, no one would take me seriously. One strange day, thought, two American scientists offer me powers. Long story short, something happened, and I don't trust them and I refuse to let them tamper with me even thought I wish I did have some kind of special ability. Now, I must complete seven tasks or they'll try to kill my family and my friends, and perhaps do some world destruction as well." I cringed remember at everything that happened. I cringed at my original response. How could I've been so cold about it? Why was I such an ass?

Serena:"Wow, so everyone's, like, a superhero where you live?" I wished I had superpowers, or did I? What the scientists had done to me was supposed to be a blessing, but it ended up more like a curse.

Luke: I let out a bitter laugh. "You can't be much of a superhero if you're a wanker."

Serena: I pondered this for a second, considering. I had never complained, out loud anyways, but I was no superhero. I couldn't think of one way that the noise in my head could help anyone, anyway. "Did you say you have a superpower now? After all of that happened to you?"

Luke: I shook my head. "No, I don't have a superpower. I wish I did, but I don't trust them."

Serena:"I wouldn't trust them, either." I closed my eyes, rubbed my temples and sighed. The buzzing was now coming in larger spurts. I forced a weak smile. "Can you tell me a story?"

Luke: That was an odd request but I stood up and then sat by her feet. I looked up. "What kind of story would you like to hear?"

Serena: "I really don't care, I was trying to read a story, but couldn't focus on written words. It's a lot easier to focus on a voice. I just need something to take my mind off of the buzzing in my head. So anything will do."

Luke: I nodded. "How about if I talk you about my friend Renata, then?"

Serena: "Perfect." I opened my eyes, so that I could focus on what I was seeing and hearing, not what was inside my head.
