"Nah, I think I'll go first" I countered with a smile, turning on my heel and heading into the evidence room. Ah... let's see... guns, knives, a crowbar.... ooh, an electrocuting joy buzzer, Joker's been looking for that... hm... aha! I snatched my deck of cards off one of the shelves with a wide grin, then counted them up to make sure all 52 were there. Perfect. Always felt off balance without them...

I roll my eyes and follow, looking through the boxes until she pulls out her deck and counts 'em. Holding them like a child. The mutterings of police get closer, as does the sound of sirens as they call everyone back to base. Maybe we'll be able to take out the whole damn fleet of them. Huh, 'we'. Never worked with anyone before. Never any fun; they always got in the way or got some conflicting scrap of moral left over. Not this girl though, i could tell.

"So... probably shouldn't stick around for too much longer, unless you want to have a chat with our good friends, the police..." Sliding my cards back in my belt, once I was sure they were all there, I began scanning for an exit. Didn't seem to be many options other than the front door... but then we'd have to plow through the entire police force.
Actually, I was okay with that.

"Please cards, you afraid of some men in blue? I hear its the one in black you should watch out for. These pansies got nothing on us, me in particular..." I smirk back at her. "I had to deal with the Superfreak in tights after all." Putting my hands on my hips, I walk out and look around. "There's that legendary signal though right? On the roof?"

I nodded slightly, a smile creeping on the edges of my lips. I could never keep smiles away for long, like a force of habit. Or infection. "That's the Batsy beacon. Ha! Maybe we could light it up and get ourselves some /real/ fun"

"Donno how long you were in the slammer, but its mid afternoon, cards. Bats don't come out in the daylight..." I lay a hand on an officer who stumbled too close, giving him a bit of a shock. "But it means that there's some access to the roof somewheres."

I remember absentmindedly as I drive over to a sushi place for a quick dinner. Needed away from studies for a minute or I would pass out.
Been seeing a lot of Marnie recently. Bruce and her father have meetings every now and again at the manor, and she sometimes comes. We hang out, she'd play the piano we have, somehow in tune despite the fact that no one's ever touched it. hum, laugh...sing... And it's a distraction from another chain of thought. How was Beth...? Could I visit Mount Justice without hurting her? Too late; you already did... How long now? A month?
No a distraction. This and school and...something else... Eighteen more days...

I look up at her. She's giving a sweet smile.
"Sorry..."
"No, it's fine..." She looks down into her soda embarrassed, slight blush to her cheeks. Softly, she starts humming and I smile lightly. Easy to drift off. Easy to lose track of what's bothering me... Wandering in a fog of peacefulness and ease.
"Won't you kiss me?" She whispers, and it sort of sounds like its hummed, just a part of the little song.
Wordlessly I lean forwards to her...

What...Am I doing lately?
Past years haven't...been like this... My grades have dipped, sure. Not like this though. I've felt secluded before, but not to the point of others noticing. Perhaps I was just acting secluded now. Locked in my room mostly, just saying I had homework or was tired...
Her lyrics mesh in my head again. Who's...? I can't even remember... Just... Her voice... And this message I keep getting from them. Do /something/. Stop waiting around. Tomorrow's the day, after all. Eight years...since I watched them fall to their deaths...
So I put on this costume. Say I'll make it right when I really don't. I'm doing nothing to make it better. I'm trying to save the world for them.

I look around the empty fairgrounds, the disheveled tent and the broken down buildings. I came here to remember. To think. There was...some other reason I came here before, right? I...couldn't remember that reason. I wish I could... I had a feeling it had always given me some sort of happiness before...
The haunted house is just a building now. But it feels significant for some reason. I walk on.
The house of mirrors. I look at myself. I feel like I'm seeing myself for the first time. It was them who had needed saving. And I do nothing still...
Robin. I donned a family nickname and did nothing.
Tonight I don something else though...

I watch. Outside of a window I watch them. They seem familiar. Of course they would. The Commissioner and his daughter. They were always on television.
He gets up from the table and goes down the hallway. She moves to clean the dishes from dinner. I lose track of him for a moment until he appears in his bedroom. I take my chance.
Jump across, shielding my face as I go through his window. He turns surprised, but I catch him, turn and slam him into a wall. Another mirror, broken by the force. A new mask. A new costume. Red X. My new name.
"Where is he?" I demand. "Where is Tony Zucco?!"
His daughter kicks the door in, holding up the commissioner's gun at me. Somewhere in my mind makes me laugh.
Bats wouldn't like that of you, Babs.
...Who? I mentally shake it away, knocking the man unconscious before leaving as quickly as I came. She runs to the broken window, looks out, but by then I'm cloaked, hidden in the night.
I'd need another source then.

Elizabeth
Even though it was just a walk- just a normal... civilian walk... I found myself on edge. It was just a little hard disengaging from 'hero' mode at the end of the day, sometimes. I found myself scanning the area every so often, checking for anything suspicious.

But there was nothing suspicious to be seen, so I tugged my jacket hood just a little lower over my head and kept my eyes glued to the sidewalk. I just needed a little fresh air, I told myself. That was it.
I was just starting to feel more suffocated in the mountain, lately. A bit of a sense of... not... belonging, I guess. I had thought I had gotten over that a while back, but now that Robin wasn't... I just felt a little less at home, you know? He was the one that had been teaching me what to do, how to act, he helped me relate with the others, and I had been learning. I really had. But now...? I didn't doubt I was a hero now, and I wouldn't change that, but...without him around, I felt out of place. Almost like I shouldn't be there. A puzzle piece that didn't quite fit in with the ones around it.

Gambit
Flourishes were good practice. Kept the mind from wandering too far off. Think of the job, the layout of the building, the security you knew to be there. Find your way around all of that...
But that was still in a few hours. Still had some free time on the streets of... where was this again... Ah, so much traveling around recently for clients I dont even know where I am anymore. East coast somewheres...
Collecting my cards into a pile again, just doing a one handed shuffle for now. Wonder if there were any good casinos around...

Spades
I found myself shuffling my cards again, just... for the familiar feel of the playing cards in my hands. Then I looked up from the ground, my gaze wandering around the crowd again, still looking for something suspicious out of work habit... plus, I was starting to try to trust instinct more...
Then I spotted a guy with a stack of cards, doing a pretty cool one handed shuffle. My gaze stuck with him for a couple of seconds, before going back down to the sidewalk. Hm...

Gambit
I pause a moment, finding a comfortable spot against a building. Oh, the university. I was supposed to acquire some expensive chip of some sort there... "Interested chere?" Having seen her looking, i ask as she walks by. I smile. "You the gambling type or just like a show?"

Spades
I pause for a moment, taken off guard by the sudden question.
"Just interested in the cards, I guess" I said with a slight shrug, sliding my own deck back into my pocket.

Gambit
Saw she had some too. "Oh?" I flick a card from my deck in one hand to my other. "All in the cards..." Eight of diamonds. A possible friend, hm? At least it was positive news.

I stole a glance at the card in his hand. Eight of diamonds... interesting. Think that had something to do with the future and friendship, though I could be wrong. However, I was pretty sure reading cards didn't count if you weren't the one drawing from the deck, and that him having the same kind of card reading power as me would be too coincidental. Nevertheless, curiosity got the best of me, and I grabbed a single card from the stack in my pocket.
Eight of diamonds. ...Huh.

"Yeah" I echoed with a slight, amused smile "All in the cards"

Gambit
Hmm? An unusual chance, a big one at that, or is the universe yellin at us... I put my card back, pocketing my hands with my deck. She wasn't familiar, so I haven't met her before. Younger than most girls I find myself with, but there was an edge to her I liked. "Remy LeBeau, if you please, chere. Pleasure to meet a fellow card shark up east here." Enemies knew me as something else, but I didn't think there was a need for /that/.

Spades
"Nice to meet you, Remy. I'm-" I paused for a fraction of a second, not used to introducing myself with this name. Didn't want a slip up... "Elizabeth Green"

Gambit
An odd set of eyes for the pretty lady, a sharp green. I took note of her hesitation but didn't make much of it. "Favor seems to be in our meeting then?" I ask, gesturing to the card.

Spades
That gets a small smile out of me, but it was so quick that he could have blinked and missed it "Guess so" I mumbled, putting the card back with the others.

Gambit
I raise an eyebrow at her slight smile, quickly there then gone like it never existed. "So? Shall we humor the universe and go along with our drawings or fold our hand for more favorable cards?" I smile back, my smile slight like hers, but teasing, almost daring.

Spades
Richie's excuse for leaving me was so I could meet new people, after all... I took a deep breath. Relax, Liz, he just wants to hang out... "Who are we to ignore Lady Luck?" I said softly, a small amount of humor in my voice

Gambit
"Ah, but it was not the queen of hearts! She's /my/ lucky lady..." I chuckle, give a true smile at her new attitude. "What to do then, chere? I'm in town for the month. We could plan a day or plan the span of my stay until I have to go to my next client." What do you say? Want to gamble a little?

Spades
"Prefer the ace of spades myself" I said quickly, then glanced up at him "Client? What kind of profession are you in, exactly?"

Gambit
Ace of spades. Wasn't that a local legend or something here? Afraid I've been away from the area too long, though I do remember articles about such a name. "Sales, chere. Taking part in conventions and such. Today's a lovely day off, however."
