Artemis sighed and looked him over "you wouldn't be the first to break their word here"

Izzy snorted, "So? That's whoever, not me." He continued to frown. "I don't leave people behind. If I did I'd be on the outside right now.

Artemis's eyes opened at his words "you can leave?"

Izzy frowned, "I don't know if I can or not. When I was alive and me and Mirissa were cell mates I decided to try. She was just a scared little girl then, the slightest thing could make her freeze or burst into tears."

Artemis raised an eyebrow "mirissa? scared? hard to imagine"

Izzy smiled, "I know, she's changed a lot from the sweet, innocent girl who wouldn't squish a spider cause it might hurt the bug."

Artemis giggled and froze, the action feeling weird. "what happened?" she asked wryly "what changed?"

Izzy hesitated, "I think it happened when we tried to escape. I was pretty confident we could do it. I planed it out for days. When the time came I focused to see as far as I could. My power made it where I could see what would happen if I did certain things. "

Artemis tilted her head "what happened next?"

"We rushed the guards, well I did. She was still learning how to deal with her blindness. We made it into the halls, and almost to the for when she tripped. I was torn, the door was right there. But I couldn't leave her behind. So I went back to help her up, taking out as many guards as possible. She couldn't move she was crying so hard." Izzy took a deep breath, before he could continue.

Artemis reached out and tentatively slipped her hand in his, trying to comfort him "what happened next?"

Izzy's eyes squeezed shut, the scene playing out in his mind. "I stopped before her and stood, offering my hand. She was trembling so hard and shaking her head. Said she couldn't do it, that she wasn't strong enough to go any further towards our dream of freedom. My eyes sad I started to bend down to pick her up when I heard the first shot."

Artemis eyes widened "that's how you died?"

Izzy winced, then nodded. "I felt the first one, the pain so bad my mind tried to reject it. I still stood in front of her, shielding her from them. I barely had time to process the blood on my chest before it was followed by too many shots to count. I don't remember much after that, except her face filled with fear and horror as I collasped right before her."

Artemis squeezed his hand, "I am so sorry" that was all she could say

Izzy shrugged, forcing the memory. "Not so bad for me anymore. Mirissa hasn't gotton past it though. She was six years old."

Artemis frowned, poor mirissa " is that why you've stayed here? to protect her?"

Izzy nodded slowly, Yeah. She changes a lot. Never shows weakness anymore....barely any emotion but anger. "

"I've noticed" artemis snorted, rubbing her head "one could say she's lost it"

Izzy nodded chuckling, "yes one could."

Artemis grinned and fell silent "what's going to happen to us?"

Izzy was silent for a moment. , "I'm gonna get ya outta here."

Artemis rolled her eyes "right, cause that ended so well last time"

Izzy frowned, her words drilling the memory back into the front of his mind. "I know." He said softly.
